British Airways Free Upgrade to First Class

Pay for a business class return ticket and travel in First Class in one direction.

This deal only applies to the higher business-class fares, not the cheapest Saturday-night-stay fares. Probably not the fares you’d normally choose to pay. But if they are the only available prices for your trip, you should take advantage of this!

You will also earn extra First Class Avios even though it’s a free upgrade.

You have to book First in one direction and business in the other direction. It’s not a case of, having bought a return ticket, of then asking the airline to “upgrade” you. So it’s not really an upgrade per se. This deal is displayed on ba.com if you choose business class in your search.

The availability of seats is limited to “A” class at the time of booking

This deal can actually reduce the normal business return fare …
Monday to Friday, Miami Return, the lowest business fare is £5,327 but by choosing First Class in one direction the fare is £3,733

For comparison, the lowest business fare to Miami is currently £2,952 but you must stay a Saturday night and this fare cannot be upgraded to First Class

You must book on or before 13th March 2015

For departures up to 11th April 2015 and complete return travel by 18th April

BA Business Sale – Book by midnight Wednesday 12 November 2014

This sale is for Business and First Class travel but will not apply to people booking business travel, unless they can comply with the following general restrictions:

  • The sale is for “selected travel dates” only.
  • Most fares require that you stay a Saturday night, except flights city airport. And many fares require that you book and pay at least 28 days in advance, except Club Europe tickets.
  • The fares do not allow refunds and do not allow refunds.

We believe that these rules are intended to restrict the travel to the leisure market rather than corporate business travel. But there may be some trips that can be arranged in advance, and where the traveller may want to extend to include a Saturday night / weekend away.

Unusually, this sale is available for travel from as far in advance as October 2015!

Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Kingston, Port of Spain, Punta Cana, St Kitts, Tobago, St Lucia, Cancun, Providenciales, Las Vegas, Orlando and Tampa.
Travel from Gatwick: 22 November – 13 October 2015

Travel from Heathrow 22 November 2014 – 5 September 2015.

Most of these fares will not include free seat assignment, unless the traveller is a Silver or Gold executive member. Bronze members can choose seats 7 days in advance, but for other travellers it has to be at check-in (online from 24 hours before departure) or at a cost of up to £65 per person per flight

Remember that the lowest online British Airways fares are only available directly from the British Airways Website.

An easy way to spend Avios to save up to £300 on British Airways flights

I often hear complaints regarding availability of flights using Avios.

It can be impossible for the dates required, and you need to be quite flexible – and book far in advance or last-minute, and you may end up having to buy a ticket for cash

For those with a large bank of unspent Avios, British Airways now offer up to £300 off normal paid-for tickets.

This applies to long-haul flights only and from Heathrow or City airports only.

In World Traveller (Economy class) or World Traveller Plus (Premium), save up to £100 using 15,000 Avios in part payment.

In Club World (Business class) or First, save up to £300 for 45,000 Avios

This values Avios at only 0.66p each which isn’t particularly good value but at least you will get rid of Avios for real cash savings.

Visit this British Airways page for further information or simply search via our BA page above, and you’ll be given the opportunity to reduce the fare with Avios during the booking process.

NB Part pay with Avios is not available via Travel Agents and is not available via any other online site.

Up to 7,000 bonus Avios by booking BA flights before 28 November

To the following destinations, British Airways is offering an additional bonus of 7,000 Avios in First Class, 5,000 Avios in Club World Business Class (J,C&C Class) 2,500 for World Traveller Plus (Premium, W&E Class), 1,000 World Traveller (Y&B) , Club Europe (JCD) 500 for domestic Y&B

If booking business class then this is a good deal.

If booking economy class, the bonus is only available in Y and B class which are the most expensive fares. Here are some example fares for those two classes, B and Y respectively:

Istanbul price range: £793 to £954
Moscow, £703 to £1,131
Bangkok £1,173 to £1,853

The bonus is payable on these services with outbound travel to 28 November and return by 12 December

LONDON HEATHROW to:

Aberdeen
Baku
Bangkok
Buenos Aires
Cape Town
Edinburgh
Geneva
Hong Kong,
Houston
Istanbul
Luanda
Moscow
Nice
Rome
Sao Palo
Stockholm
Tel Aviv

LONDON CITY AIRPORT to:

Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Rotterdam, Bari, Bordeaux, Edinburgh, Jersey

My opinion? A nice gesture for making a booking but not worth paying a higher fare simply to achieve the bonus

Free upgrades on British Airways – book by 12 December

British Airways is still offering a free upgrade in one direction from Business Class to First Class.

But the upgrade is now only available when booking the higher fare types, namely J and C class “published fare”. Previously, lower R class fares were included.

For example, the J class return fare to Los Angeles is £9,936 return and the C class is £7,974

To Dubai, the J class fare is £4,980 and the C class £4,015

If the lowest Business Class fares are available, for example Dubai £2,316, then your traveller may not wish to pay the extra for the “free” upgrade.

However, you may be booking at short notice and unable to take advantage of Advance Purchase fares, or it may be a busy time of year and in these situations where only the higher fare is available, the free upgrade to First Class will be appreciated!

Applies to travel outbound to 31 December and return (arrival in UK) by 7 January inclusive.

British Airways New Route London to Split, Croatia

Split is fast gaining popularity.

During summer 2015 it will be served by easyJet, Norwegian and Croatia Airlines from Gatwick.

Wednesday         6th May Heathrow to Split departing 07:30 arriving 11:05

Return schedules:

Sunday                 Split – Heathrow Depart 17:35 arriving 19:15
Wednesday         Split – Heathrow Depart 11:55 arriving 13:35

Aircraft used: Airbus A319

One way fares begin at £79 and return fares from £127

Remember that you will not find cheaper fares anywhere other than on the official BA website.

Please visit our British Airways page for more information and bookings

When do airlines announce sales?

The title of this post could also be, “When is it best to book flights?”

If you are intending to book travel in say 10 months’ time, it is very difficult to judge when is the cheapest time to book your flight?

This article applies to long-haul flight-only travel and not to short-haul or “low-cost” airlines.

If you book as soon as the flights are “loaded” in computer systems you may pay too much as the airlines are likely to reduce fares once they have monitored demand.

There are two or three things that you have to consider when trying to work out when is best to book flights in advance.

Demand for seats

Is there an event going on at the time you wish to travel?
A trade show or something similar?
If that’s the case then seats will be taken irrespective of the fare and the cheapest prices will not reappear.
In which case, book immediately!

Flexibility

If the dates or timings are fixed and of importance then it may be safer to book immediately.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Historic Sale Dates

We have monitored the sales of both airlines over several years and the following pattern has emerged. NB Both BA and Virgin have a tendency to match fares and sale dates….

SPRING SALE

From mid to late February to early March

WINTER – CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR SALE

Around 20 December to 3rd January but often extended to mid to late January

SUMMER BUSINESS CLASS SALE

During the first week to 10 days of June, to encourage you to fly business class during the low (corporate travel) summer season

SUMMER SALE

1st week or 10 days of July.

(Far too late for summer bookings of course, but is an enticement to forward book)

AUTUMN SALE

Early September to the 23rd or 24th September

Also the 1st week November. This year, (2014) British Airways started their Business Class sale a little earlier, from 23 October to Wednesday 12 November

How to extend the British Airways Sale Deadline

I recently posted an article about the new function on the BA website where you can hold a seat for £5 short-haul and £10 long-haul.

I waited until today to check if this facility can be used in effect to extend the payment deadline during a sale period. Normally, when an end-of-sale deadline is given, it applies to reservation and ticket issue by a certain date. And ticket issue of course implies full payment too.

The British Airways Sale ends Tuesday 22nd September 2014 and if you are booking via a travel agency, that is still the very latest booking, ticket issue and payment date.

However, the online function mentioned above can still be used to gain up to an additional 72 hours before having to commit to a booking (with full non-refundable payment)

Changes to the booking cannot be made during this hold period however. Any change would require a new booking – and at new prices.

The £5 or £10 hold fee is deducted from your balance payment.

For the guaranteed lowest fares, book directly at the British Airways website here.

British Airways Upgrade Offer 2014

British Airways is offering a free upgrade from Business Class to First Class. It’s not what we’d normally think of in terms of an “upgrade”. For that, you’d normally buy a cheaper ticket and afterwards be rewarded with the upgrade.

The current offer is in reality a lower price for first class at the point of sale. I have seen examples where to fly in first class in one direction and business in the other, can be as much as £300 cheaper than buying a business class return fare.

The upgrade offer is for reservations booked on or before September 30th 2014 and for travel – departures up to 31st December 2014

If you are a member of the British Airways On Business Scheme you may also qualify for a 5% discount off the air fare and additional flexibility (refundable and changeable without charge)

This offer is not available online and if you need assistance do use the contact us form and we’ll recommend a company to you that can facilitate this for you.

Should you use Avios to discount your British Airways flight?

You can now use Avios to reduce the cost of a flight booking but is this a good value?

Discount £10 Costs 1,500 Avios
Discount £20 Costs 3,000 Avios
Discount £30 Costs 4,500 Avios

BA has recently increased the offer so that On longer European routes, if you are booking two or more travellers, you can save up to £100 total:

Discount £60 Costs 9,000
Discount £100 Costs 15,000

Longer routes include London to Athens and London to Istanbul

The redemption value is 0.666 p per Avios (That’s £0.006)

If you’ve converted Tesco Clubcard points to boost your AVIOS you will have actually paid 0.4 p per Avios

So you are in profit – but not by a great margin.

And consider that for 9,000 Avios you may be able to buy a return flight ticket that may cost as much as £200

In which scenario you’d achieve a value of 2p per Avios – which is much better. But finding availability can be difficult, and the discount offer applies to any flight that has an economy fare available.

If you are booking business travel, the Avios discount will be more attractive than attempting to find a completely free ticket.

To obtain your discount, book flights as you would normally on ba.com and after selecting your preferred schedules, you will be offered the opportunity to choose the discount.

You will also earn additional Avios on the booking which will increase the overall value of the deal.

How to find the Avis Car Hire Sale prices

Avis is offering 20% off their normal rates for cars rented up to Friday 12th December 2014
Bookings can be made up to and including Monday 29th September

The Avis website looks slick but can be difficult to use.

If you click-through from a cashback site or if you just search from their main page (Avis.co.uk) you will NOT be offered the sale prices! You must visit their sale page and click through from there.

Here is the Avis Sale link which will pre-populate the savings code box with this code: L627900

I picked up an Audi A1 recently, 3 days for £117, and was very impressed.

You can earn BA Avios too if you supply your executive membership number

Earn reward points for your stay at Hyatt and the Andaz London Liverpool Street

The Hyatt Gold Points rewards scheme gives you 5 points per dollar spend at the restaurant or for overnight accommodation.

The website says that only published rates will accrue points. So, bookings made via Expedia or other 3rd party sites are excluded.

But what if you are a business traveller paying a reduced – negotiated – corporate discounted price?

We’ve checked, and the Andaz sales people say that these rates are eligible for reward points

3 nights at £330 per night should earn approx 3,000 points in total

https://goldpassport.hyatt.com/gp/en/benefits/join.jsp

Hyatt Rewards can be redeemed for free nights but the cost depends on the category

Category 1 Cost 5,000 points           No Europe / UK Hotels
Category 2 Cost 8,000 points           Armenia, Egypt, Warsaw
Category 6 Cost 25,000 points         The Andaz London is in this category

So you’d need approximately 8 or 9 stays at the Andaz London in order to earn just 1 night but by my calculation that is equivalent to a 4% cash-back which is pretty good is it not?

Better still, until 31st August, you can earn bonus Avios instead. Enroll with Hyatt Gold Passport using promotion code BA14S and select British Airways Executive Club Avios as the earning preference and provide their Executive Club membership number at time of check-in
More information here:
http://hyatthotels.hyatt.com/content/partnerlandingpage/en/14air-britishairways.html

Choose British Airways as your preferred airline at check-in and you can earn up to 21,000 Avios!

BA Upgrade from Business to First Class at no extra cost

British Airways offers this promotion to most long-haul destinations (except to the Caribbean).

I use London to Dubai as an example of how the upgrade works;

The lowest business class return fare to Dubai is £2,310 but that fare is non-refundable and non-changeable – even for a fee. A minimum stay of 3 nights is required and availability is limited.

So for business travel, it is likely that the more flexible fare of £2,773 is the only available price for the trip. This fare has better availability and allows changes and refunds for a fee of £200. This is the price on ba.com

If you book through a travel agency however, you could be upgraded to First Class in one direction – at no extra cost!

This upgrade offer applies to reservations made up to Friday 23rd May and is for departures up to 31st August

If you are On Business members, you are entitled to a discount of 5% off the actual air fare, reducing the total to £2,660

And you’ll benefit from free cancellation and no change fees

On any of these fares the individual traveller will still receive the usual Avios and Tier points.

However, if you take the On Business discount, your company will not receive any On Business Points. The booking will appear on your statement as “ineligible corporate deal”.

The points you would normally receive for a Business & First Class trip total 1,920 and I suggest a value of between 7p and 15p for each point in redemption terms so you’ll lose between £134 and £288 worth of points. Use a BA American Express corporate card and you’ll earn a 50% bonus.

So it may be better to pay the additional £113 for the higher fare – but that depends on what degree of flexibility – if any, is required!

British Airways Business Class Sale ends midnight Tuesday 11 March

Book by Tuesday night 11th March to take advantage of the BA sale

Example prices:

Dubai £1,650 return – travel even in December!

Mumbai £1,169 return

Beijing £1,767 but only in August, expect to pay £2,000 for most other dates

Shanghai £1,780 July & August, expect £2,400 for October to December

Details of the sale are available here.

It is unusual for a BA Sale to include travel for dates so far in advance so if you can plan in advance, you may achieve significant savings.

If you require an overview of BA prices I recommend using the excellent “Low Price Finder” on the BA website here.

£15 OFF British Airways flights – book by Friday 7th March 2014

A voucher code is available, providing a £15 discount off return fares to Europe

This offer is targeted at members of the Living Social deals club but appears to be available to anyone who enters the voucher code into the ba.com booking page.

BA state that the discount only applies to Gatwick departures but when we tested it the reduction was also applied to flights from London Heathrow.

Outbound travel must take place between 1st March 2014 and 12th April 2014

Full details and bookings are available here

Business Traveller Magazine – Sign up and earn 2,000 Avios

If you buy 2,000 AVIOS as a BA executive member, the cost will be £47

We recommend that instead, you buy a three year subscription to Business Traveller Magazine via the BA executive club page and you will receive 20% discount and 2,000 AVIOS for FREE!

The 3 year subscription costs £92, so if you take the value of Avios into account, you’re paying just £45 for 30 issues

You can go direct to the offer via the Business Traveller Publisher or via the British Airways Executive Offers Page.

Where to find Air China discount fares

We are increasingly asked about flights to China and specifically, Air China flights so we have researched the entire UK travel market for Air China Discount air fares and we’re surprised that nobody offers a discount below the Air China website direct price.

We were looking at London – Beijing – London, Sunday out and Friday back. British Airways quote over £2,000 because the airline requires a Saturday night stay before they’ll offer reasonable prices.

Air China does not have this restriction and offline travel agent fares were in the region of £770 return, including agent fees or markups, and credit card charges.

Expedia priced at £741 with no credit card surcharges. Several other agents offered the £730-£740 range e.g. Opodo at £737 (plus their hidden credit card fees etc)

Air China direct offered a discount fare of £711 which was, by far, the cheapest in the UK
market. Go direct to Air China here.

Note – you’ll need passport details in order to make the reservation.

PS The Air China 2 letter code is CA and the 3 letter airport code is PEK (Peking – now Beijing)

Please note. Booking Business Travel makes no commission from this advice. We simply

want you to find the best deal. If you need a hotel, why not try our comparison engine and

save even more money?!

British Airways Sale Ends Midnight Tuesday 28 January

The British Airways Sale fares must be booked and paid for before midnight.

It is always difficult to second-guess what prices will be after the sale but for a general picture:

Beijing,is currently £619 return in O class must be booked by Tuesday night.

The next higher fare £659 in Q class is also a sale fare applicable to Tuesday

A £700 fare is booked in N class and that is available for sale after the Tuesday deadline. So we anticipate an increase of

approximately £80 on long-haul economy bookings

We’ll monitor this example and keep you updated.

In the meantime, to benefit from the sale fares please visit our British Airways Page

How does BA American Express Companion Voucher Work?

What is a British Airways Companion Voucher?

Companion vouchers are earned by the traveller by meeting minimum spend targets on Amex credit cards

The companion voucher is accessible online as an e-voucher via the travellers BA executive club account.

So you’ll need the exec number and password. When you log-in you’ll see the companion voucher and its expiry date.

How to use a companion voucher

The Companion Voucher allows the main British Airways American Express account holder, when making a flight booking using Avios, to book another seat on the journey for a Companion without having to pay the Avios flight price for that Companion.

If the member has 2 vouchers they can take 2 people at the same price!

The account holder will have to pay the tax and fuel surcharges etc which can, for a long haul business class ticket cost typically £500+

Both travellers have to travel in the same cabin (class) and travel together.

The BA site does not allow you to book Avios tickets out  to one city and back from another. You’ll need to call BA. (example: If you want London to Shanghai and Beijing to London) In travel speak this is called an open jaw ticket.

Is it worth spending On Business Points on Marriott hotel bookings?

The British Airways On Business reward scheme is a generous programme of rewards for bookings made by small to medium sized companies.

Points are earned for British Airways flights and can be spent on flights, upgrades and … Marriott hotels

Marriott hotel rewards have been available for on business points in the form of prepaid vouchers.

For companies who may have points expiring, and with no flights needing to book, Marriott vouchers have been a good way of mopping up any remaining points balance that may have been due to expire at the year end.

All change … the relationship between Marriott and British Airways is due to expire.

You can still “purchase” Marriott vouchers up to 31st December and they can be used for up to 15 months from the date of delivery.

But, are Marriott vouchers worth it?

If your points are going to waste then of course, yes! But, otherwise ?

There are five Worldwide Marriott categories on the British Airways On Business Award Voucher offer with the following points required for one night:

I include the link to save you searching the British Airways Page

Category              Points   Points Value

Classic                   2,000     £100-£300
Signature             3,000     £150-£450

Premier                5,000     £250-£750
Elite                       6,000     £300-£900
Ultimate              7,000     £350-£1,050

Now, trying to find out which Marriott Hotel property is in which category is difficult!

The worst thing about the way that Marriott provide the information, apart from being in a PDF format, is that they duplicate the Classic hotels in the Signature and Premier pages. So, if you spotted the Prague Airport hotel in the Premier pages be warned that you could find it cheaper in the Signature group!

So I have picked mainly European cities and categorized below to make a search simpler.

I also attribute a nominal “points value” that is to say, what the points would have been valued at if you had spent them on flights.

NB The rewards include “last room availability” and breakfast for two

Classic:                 2,000 points, £100+

How much is an On Business Reward point worth?

In general, when redeeming points you should aim to achieve a value of between 10p to 20p per point but you may only achieve 5p per point

My valuations (above), are based on the lower valuation so you can decide for yourself whether to proceed.

Take for example the following two hotels in Sharm El Sheikh

Renaissance Sharm El Sheikh and Golden View Beach Resort which can be found via HotelsCombined  for £50 per night but would cost approx £100 worth of British Airways On-Business points.

The Renaissance Copenhagen, in the Elite category, costs 6,000 points or a £300 minimum value but can be found online using our comparison site from £140 – £200 (and that is mid-week)

So not necessarily good value, at all, which is probably why the arrangement between BA and Marriott will end 31st December 2013

Procedure to redeem On Business points for Marriott hotel stays

You’ll need to order e-vouchers online and allow up to 72 hours to receive them.

These can only be used to book single nights online at a property in the range of the certificate you choose.

Bookings for more than one night have to be arranged via the Marriott call centre.

Hotel stays must be within 15 months of the e-voucher delivery
