The end of our recommended search engine ?

Since April of last year, Google has had a flight comparison facility called Google Flight Search (yes, very original)

We’ve watched it since it was launched and decided that it is useless if you want a complete picture – which you should

have, especially if you’re booking business travel.

See my article here about the hidden extras and incomplete flight results associated with Google Flights.

Now Ryanair’s Michael O Leary is working with Google to display its flights. Whilst that is an improvement for Google, he

say’s,

“It’ll blow comparison sites like Skyscanner out of the water.”

Read all about it in the Independent article here

We think this is an exaggeration and that Skyscanner, who already offer direct links to Ryanair and comprehensive results including all airlines will remain our recommended search engine for a long time yet!

Etihad Baggage Allowance now 30kg PLUS golf clubs

According to the Etihad London Office 0845 608 1225 the new baggage allowance of 30kg  (increased from 23kg) also applies to tickets purchased prior to the change (November 2012) when 23kg was the norm.

AND Golf Clubs, with a weight of up to 15kg are permitted in addition to the above allowance. They must be checked in i.e. they cannot be taken onboard.

As of January 2013, the Etihad website needs to be a little clearer in this respect

Looking for a holiday suggestion?

Here at Booking Business Travel we focus on helping you to book business travel online.

But we all like to holiday too, and I am frequently asked for inspirational holiday ideas.

And what used to take hours of search can now be offered immediately.

For example;

You want to fly no more than 6 hours, to a destination with a temperature of between 21-25 degrees, are content to fly out on Christmas Day and to stay for 6 nights.
And you prefer a 4* hotel.

Enter this information on the new British Airways Holiday Finder and you’ll be surprised by the last-minute options available.

You can also tailor the results by your budget range.

There are two ways to search:

British Airways Holiday Finder provides concise details

How far in advance can I book Eurostar?

I’ve just been asked this question and for flights, I know that the answer is up to one year but I’ve checked and rail bookings have a surprisingly short selling period:

For Eurostar journeys to mainline Paris, Lille and Brussels stations, you can book up to 4 months in advance, minus 2 days

This applies to both French Rail, the UK arm of French SNCF railways and Eurostar. For the genuine links to both companies and for booking tips please visit my Eurostar Page

Eurostar and TGV Train from London to Bordeaux

We have found return fares of £109 for travel in early August! This compared favourably with British Airways at £280 return

Avoiding the hassle of transiting Paris, you can choose a service via Lille, which should just be a change of platforms.

Also available, return fares at £199 return in First Class !

Other regional destinations in France are available at similar prices.

Use the Eurostar Page to compare Rail Europe prices and availability with those from Eurostar itself.

Heathrow Express Discount December 2011

Discount Heathrow Express Tickets are currently on sale directly from Heathrow Express with a 25% reduction. That’s a discount of £8.00

A standard class return ticket is discounted from £32 to £24

And the Heathrow Express discount single fare is now £16.50

This offer applies to tickets sold up to 31st December for outward travel up to 31st January 2012

NB The return date can be up to one month after outward travel (so you can return in February)

This discount offer is not available from the machines, the ticket office or on the train. Neither is it available from online train companies such as thetrainline.com or Redspottedhanky or travel agents or travel management companies

Even the Heathrow Express website does not automatically give the discount. You must visit their site by clicking on a Google advert. Simply Google “Heathrow Express Sale” and you should see the advert at the top of the page.

Return fares on the Heathrow Connect service which takes 32 minutes against Heathrow Express’s 15 minutes still cost £16.50 return.

River View Hotels Bangkok

For the most enjoyable hotel location in Bangkok, choose a hotel with a view of the Chao Phraya River.

You’ll see traffic of a different kind and can enjoy the experience of visiting the Royal Palace by public river taxi.

There are surprisingly few hotels to choose between and I summarise them in order of value-for-money:

Royal Orchid Sheraton

All rooms are river facing so you will definitely enjoy a fantastic river view. The hotel is next to a main river taxi stop so it’s easy to get around. It’s a Sheraton but it’s also starting to show its age thus the rates are lower than you might expect. Breakfast is expensive so try and get a B&B rate, otherwise there’s a restaurant outside that serves European and Thai style breakfast.

You’ll find the best rates using our Hotel Search engine which compares 20+ Hotel “bed-banks” and tour operators

Millennium Hilton Bangkok Hotel

Located opposite the Royal Orchid Sheraton

You will have to request a river view and so there is no guarantee. And the location is on “the wrong side” of the river as the main tourist attractions, shopping, restaurants, night life etc are all on the other side

The Peninsula

A superb 5* hotel but also on the wrong side of the river

Shangri-La Hotel

Next to the Skytrain station the Shangri-La is an expensive choice.

AURUM the River Palace

Converted from a 50 year old warehouse, this hotel is a 4-storey European style building with 12 guestrooms, 4 of which are river views. The rate is THB4,400+ (£93)

For all these hotels, you’ll find the best rates using our Hotel Search engine which compares 20+ Hotel “bed-banks” and tour operators

Hilton hotel sale for weekend stays only

Book by Wednesday evening, 12th October;

Hilton is has a “flash sale” of 50,000 rooms worldwide with astonishing rates, but it is for weekend stays only, between 14 October and 16 December

These rates are not displayed in the hotel comparison sites.

Choose Hilton Hotels even if the rates appear higher, and check.

You’ll be offered the discounted rates after you click through.

We recommend you always compare by using our Hotel Comparison Page

Best Airline & Credit Card Reward Scheme

I’ve enjoyed several free flights this summer courtesy of the most generous airline and credit card reward scheme:

Sign up to BMI Diamond Club and apply for a BMI American Express Card

Spend as little as £250 within 3 months on the card and you’ll receive up to 24,000 bonus miles, enough for two return tickets within Europe.

Currently, BMI has a half price sale:

Heathrow to Moscow / Agadir / Casablanca / Nice Economy Class: 4,000 miles

Heathrow to Beirut, Damascus, Baku: 15,000 miles

Book by midnight Friday 2nd September

Best Airport Parking for Leisure Trips

Having researched airport parking at Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton we’ve conclude that instead of booking through 3rd parties that you should book direct with BAA.

Example:
One week Stansted Airport Short Stay (convenience of a walk to the terminal) just £77.00

BAA Official Airport Parking guarantee:

  • You won’t find their parking for less
  • No hidden charges
  • BAA car parks are the closest.

Visiting India Why business and leisure travellers need looking after

So you’re booking a frequent traveller who thinks they can travel independently and hail cabs to meetings and hotels?

That’s fine, in many countries. And it can be done in India too but I warn against it.

On a recent business trip to Delhi, which is one of India’s more “organised” cities, with a fabulous subway, I experienced three days as host of a travel company, with a car and driver at my disposal and options to visit shows, tourist sites and restaurants.

I also spent a few days travelling around the city independently and despite many years of similar travel backpacking, I found the second experience exhausting.

There’s the dust and pollution to contend with.

The difficulty of finding a cab during the rush hour.

What appears to be a short walk on the map can turn into an Annapurna Expedition.

Being misdirected again and again at street level when searching for even a large international hotel which is 5 minutes away….

Booking Business Travel recommends that a local agent take care of you whilst visiting India. The relative cost of having a car with a driver and optional tour guide is minimal.

And you will avoid hours of frustration.

You could book this through a UK agent but they will simply buy the services of a local agent so I recommend that you go direct.

SIDDARTH Travel is an IATA agent located in Delhi, and part of the Interserve network of over 100 agents throughout India.

Their attention to detail is second to none and they can arrange ground transportation, hotels and optional tours – locally, and further afield, for example, the Himalayas.

Details of Siddarth Travel can be found here

Discount Eurostar Tickets

Eurostar does not offer discount ticket prices below those on its own site.

You will not find discounted Eurostar prices through travel agents or online websites below those offered direct from the official Eurostar site.

However; we do recommend that you compare fares with those offered by Rail Europe

Rail Europe is the UK representative of French Railways (SNCF) and they use the French reservation system which may offer availability at prices that Eurostar may have sold out of.

Both official search engines are provided on our Eurostar Page

There are benefits of booking Eurostar direct:

• Option to book Rail + Hotel for further discounts
• The system warns you if there are less than 10 seats
• Fixed £4 credit card charge, debit cards are free
• Choice of window/aisle/solo seat preference, or
• Specific seat selection at the 3rd booking stage
• SMS text message option in case of delay/cancellations
• Print ticket at home (or office) option, free of charge, and go direct to check-in!
• Ticket on departure, free of charge, but collection by the card-holder only
• Telephone support: 08432 186 186 from 8am to 7pm Mon-Fri, 9-5 Sat/Sun

For your convenience, we provide both Eurostar and SNCF search forms on our Eurostar Page

Booking Tips to reserve a train to Europe

For booking a train ticket to Europe to stations other than the Eurostar mainline stations: Lille, Paris, Brussels, we suggest you use Eurostar to price your through journey first.

Then compare the through journey with Rail Europe

Through tickets are more convenient as you will make one online booking, with little chance of making a mistake. However, it may be considerably cheaper to split the booking into two:

Price the ticket as just as far as the Eurostar mainline station with Eurostar, and, separately, using Rail Europe (SNCF), or German Rail (DER), price the onward domestic ticket.

You may reduce the fare considerably.

An alternative to Rail Europe and worth taking the time to check, is French railways SNCF direct, but you must use the French Language Site*

Booking Tips for Booking French Railways French Language Site

If your French is really poor, use Google Chrome as your web browser as there is an automated page translator which will help.

You will be asked, “Sélectionnez le pays de réception ou de retrait des billet” which translates as “Select the country of receipt or withdrawal of the ticket”

If you choose Grande Bretagne you will be redirected to a Rail Europe site which may cost you more.

Choose FRANCE

Choose e-billet …“Imprimez ou modifiez votre confirmation e-billet en ligne quand vous voulez”  which translates as  Print or edit your e-ticket confirmation online when you want

You can even choose to book now and pay later! (Ou posez une simple option et payez plus tard)

Heathrow Express Discount June 2011

Our promotional discount of Heathrow Express Tickets has ended but we still recommend that you purchase round-trip tickets rather than single journeys, that you book in advance online and save money compared to purchasing onboard.

UPDATE December 2011

Heathrow Express discount of 25% for bookings in December 2011 and outbound travel up to end January 2012
The normal online fare for Express Class Return is £32 but the sale fare saves £8 at a price of £24.00
To obtain the discount Heathrow Express fare you have to click on a Google advert, otherwise you will be charged the normal fare.

Simply Google “Heathrow Express Sale”

British Airways Business Class Sale – book by 21st June

The BA sale is directed at leisure travellers as all tickets require a Saturday night stay.  The airfares are non refundable (although government tax and airport charges of up to £270, included in the fares below, are refundable)

Canny business travellers who stick to their travel plans, and maybe add a weekend holiday to the beginning or end of their trips, thus staying a Saturday night, can benefit from these prices too.

Bookings generally need to be made in advance – by as much as 28 days before departure.

Example return fares in Business Class:

New York            £1,869

Mumbai               £1,750

Hong Kong          £2,447

Bangkok               £2,650

This offer is for travel through to 31st December 2011 and should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment!

British Airways do not discount these prices through any travel agent – or any online agent. The price you see is the price you pay except for a £4.50 charge should you choose to pay by credit card.

Visit British Airways direct to book online.

Travel to Bordeaux by train

I’ve just seen Eurostar for just £109 return from London to Lille including French high speed TGV rail from Lille to Bordeaux travelling in AUGUST! – without all those nasty extras that Ryanair would add.

And the journey itself is enjoyable!

Midweek travel has better availability. I found seats for 2nd August out and 9th August back which is amazing as most French holidays start that week.

Be sure to check on both search engines on our Eurostar Page

Trains arrive into Bordeaux St Jean station at around 5-6pm and if that is a little late to travel on to the beaches and vineyards, why not enjoy a night in this elegant city?

The Hotel Du Faisan Bordeaux is a typical 19th century residence with 62 guest rooms with prices for single or double rooms for under £50
