Discount Gatwick Express Tickets 2012

I once assumed that the Gatwick Express service between London Victoria Station and Gatwick Airport would be the best option, albeit the most expensive.

But I was suprised to discover that Southern Rail offered me the same journey which took just one minute longer! The journey was 31 minutes compared to 30 minutes.

And the return fare cost just £15.60 return compared to the Gatwick Express fare of £25.00

Our advice; Always use the National Rail journey planner for impartial timetable and fares information.

New Look Skyscanner

We have always rated Skyscanner as the best impartial search engine for flights and with its new look and feel, it’s better than ever.

We recommend that you use Skyscanner for all economy flights especially European, even if think that you know which airline you’re going to use, because you never know what other options may have materialised unless you’ve checked.

Skyscanner is one of very few search engines that work with Ryanair

Benghazi Hotels

Searching for a hotel in Benghazi Libya?

What a challenge this was! There are no Benghazi Hotels listed in our Hotel search engine so we had to manually check each listing from Google Maps.

We were often diverted to hotels in Malta and Italy so quite some time was spent to discover the following:

Ozo Hotel, Benghazi  **** auzoo

In Google maps it is spelt as the Ozoo Hotel Benghazi but a local by the name of AL-Elwani has photographed it and spelt it as Ozo Hotel Benghazi.
It appears to be a large hotel:

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/43131595

Telephone 00 218 021 335 1990

Tibesti or Hotel Teebeste Hotel, Benghazi *****

Tel 00 218 061 909 0016

Fax  00218 0613389171

The same person has photographed the Tibesti hotel here:
http://www.panoramio.com/photo/43131566

Twice as many people have viewed this property so is it twice as popular?

Both of the above appear to be in the port area

I found a tweet from a Benghazi resident suggesting that if you want a good hotel in benghazi to try the tibesti and auzoo they’re the best
That’s from “the chosen”  @beemo_hazard libya,benghazi

This site gives a list of hotels in Benghazi:

Queen Diamond Jubilee Flypast

There is much talk about the Vulcan and even Concorde participating in the 2012 Queens diamond jubilee flypast but unfortunately, there isn’t one!

The Vulcan has been given permission from the CAA but no plans exist for a flypast exist,

The usual royal queen’s flypast has been ditched in favour of the Thames celebrations

EXPEDIA buys TRAVELDOO Technologies

Most people know Expedia as an online travel agent for leisure bookings but the company also operates a Travel Management Company by the name of EGENCIA.
EGENCIA has acquired TRAVELDOO technologies, founded in France in 2000
TRAVELDOO provides booking management technology to Travel Management Companies.
Their products assist travel clients with Travel planning, Online Bookings, Data capture and reporting.
TRAVELDOO have their own clients in addition to Expedia, numbering some 4,000+
We think this is important news as technology becomes a more and more important factor in the decision making process of which TMC to use.

Best Android App for National Rail

I absolutely love this app for UK national rail.

It provides up-to-the-minute station information e.g. 2 minute delay on the train that I’m running for…

I’ve found it to be more accurate than station announcements.

It meets my criteria: Fun to use, intuitive and useful.

It gets information directly from the ATOC system (Association Train Operating Companies)

Once, it offered me an alternative route that saved me about 10 minutes and one less change.

The app is offered by “crosscountry” and is called “Train Tickets”

How do travel agents make money

Travel agents make money in a variety of ways, depending on the product being sold.

Travel agents make money by selling holiday packages which are organised by tour operators. Or they may package the travel and hotel accommodation together themselves.

Travel agents also sell flight tickets on their own, hotels on their own, and other services such as train tickets, ferry bookings and insurance.

HOLIDAY PACKAGES
The major tour operators promote their packages through travel agents by allowing the agent to deduct a commission, typically 10%, when the agent forwards your payment to them.
Operators may also pay the agent additional incentives to sell their products. Anything from M&S vouchers through to offers of free “familiarisation trips”

TAILOR MADE PACKAGES
Another way that a travel agent can make money is by pricing a flight and hotel together as a package themselves. The hotel will pay a commission of typically 8-12% and the agent will include a mark-up of perhaps 10% into the bundled price.

FLIGHT ONLY BOOKINGS

How do travel agents make money from flight only bookings?

The airlines no longer pay the 9% that they once did. Some still pay 1% which is not enough to cover the time and cost required to process a booking.

How do travel agents make money from no-frills airlines?

No-Frills airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet display sole price levels on their websites.

If a travel agent books this for you they must charge you a “transaction fee” or “service fee” for their time.

Online travel agents include a mark-up in the fares quoted and this is why we always recommend that you book no-frills or low-cost airlines directly on the airline’s website.

How do travel agents make money from full service airlines?

As mentioned above, airlines no longer pay 9% commission. Some may pay a fixed 1%.
The airlines also pay some agents typically 1% and this is usually tied to sales and marketing activities, thus while travel agents benefit from this at year end, they cannot rely on these payments to cover the cost of selling you a ticket.

To understand how travel agents make money from flight tickets you need to know about “net fares and published fares” See our article here

A business travel agent will charge a transaction fee to arrange the booking. If the airline offers agents a lower net fare, it enables the agent to earn a margin on top of the fee.

All the leading online travel agents in the UK, such as Expedia and Opodo, include mark-ups in their prices too, but because their systems are automated, the amount charged is fixed and may be more competitive.

Thus we recommend that you always search and compare using our Flight Search as well as Expedia  and Opodo Page

Independent Travel Account Management

Your travel management company (TMC) will assign you an Account Manager.

The role is purportedly to ensure that you the client gets the most price competitive arrangement out of the business relationship but in actuality, and behind the scenes, the role is an account manager is primarily to maximise the profit for the TMC.

To whom is the allegiance of your account manager? Is it to you, the client, or to the business travel agent, the employer.

It is the TMC that pays the wages, even if you are billed for account management.

You may be charged for the account management but the manager will be looking to maximise the profit for the TMC rather than obtain you the best deal.

EXAMPLE:
There is a potential for negotiating a route deal with an airline but it isn’t suggested to you because more money is being made by the travel agent from the existing arrangement.

Ryanair baggage charges increase for bookings made after 15 December

Baggage fees are increasing for departures during June, July August and September 2012 from £20 per bag to £25

Bags that are booked through call centres or at the airport (as opposed to online) will increase from £35 to £60 per bag

From January 15th, the charge to issue a boarding card at the airport increases from £40 to £60

Passengers must be extra careful not to carry baggage that is over the limit otherwise the £60 bag charge will be enforced.

The permitted carry on allowance must not be exceeded by more than 900 g otherwise the additional fees apply!

Travel Booking Trends

Companies will book business travel online – wherever the best deal is

According to travel industry news provider, e-tid.com, a leading think tank of travel industry executives who are members of the World Travel Market Club have agreed that there is a trend towards unmanaged business travel, and that that is set to increase over the next 5 years

Corporate negotiated rates were often more expensive than spot rates available online.

Unmanaged business travel means booking travel without being restricted to a particular “deal” or “preferred supplier” and accepting the best deal available on the spot whether that is from an agent or an online website.

We at Booking Business Travel encourage this policy.

The article is here: “TMC’s will struggle against internet deals”

New Search Engine Superfly

www.superfly.com mocks other search engines such as KAYAK as being outdated so we thought we should take a look.

Yes the site is slick and simple. Yes, you can access all your frequent flier / memberships from one dashboard, which is nice, but others services do that too.

When it comes to flight search, the service MUST include ALL airlines. And the service must connect directly to airlines rather than to online travel agents such as Expedia, who, may add a mark-up to the fare.

And of course, the system needs to quote £ rather than $

So, for now, we continue to recommend Skyscanner as the best, most comprehensive and accurate search engine.

Visit our Skyscanner page here to see for yourself.

Eurostar Arrivals

The best Eurostar Arrivals Board for London St Pancras International is available here, at the National Rail Enquiries web site:

The official St Pancras International arrivals and departures are available here but the system does not recognise Paris or Brussels! You’ll need to scan through ALL arriving trains and departures including domestic train services

Surprisingly, the best live Eurostar Arrivals and Departure information is only available as an app.

Trains

This is the best app ever!
You’re on that station platform, wondering what time the train will really arrive … or what the best alternative route is going to be.

Or, you’re in a meeting and wondering if your train will be leaving on time or do you have an extra 10 minutes?

Immediate help is at hand, just one click away, from the easy to use, friendly app that provides up-to-the-second train operating information and offer alternative routes

The information can be more up-to-date than station announcements!

Top Features:

  • Live Schedules

  • Purchase tickets with no fees
  • Most information is ONE click away
  • Live arrival and departure board even includes St Pancras International Eurostar trains.

This App is produced by Cross Country, a “Train Operating Company” so you can trust the information 100%

This App is FREE whilst similar alternatives (Thales “National Rail Planner Live”) cost £3.49

Search for “Train Tickets” by CrossCountry

British Airways

The British Airways App is an essential tool for your next flight.

Helps with the following:

  • Check-in
  • Paper-free boarding card
  • Seat selection
  • Executive membership

You need to be a BA Executive Club member to take full advantage of this app

Our Verdict: A must have app even if you only fly once with BA!

Best apps for flight search

Google

We would expect Google to provide the best flight search app. What they offer is OnTheFly, which was created by a company called ITA, which Google purchased for $700 Million

Some of the look-and-feel functions are slick, such as the option to choose other airports by distance from that requested, however you cannot choose LON for all London airports; rather, you are forced to select Heathrow, Stansted, and Gatwick individually.

Flight Search should be unbiased and all airlines must be included.

OnTheFly is, in our opinion, useless because of the absence of no-frills airlines such as easyJet or Ryanair. Furthermore, the fares displayed are expensive – only “published” fares, and no discounted ticket prices.

Our verdict: Don’t use this app!

KAYAK

Similar to the above, there is an absence of Ryanair so you cannot rely on the flight search results.

Prices seem to be fixed in USD

Skyscanner

This must be the best flight search app, brought to you by Skyscanner. We feature Skyscanner on our site because it is the most accurate and unbiased flight search available in the UK today.

Skyscanner offers all low cost airlines including Ryanair. And it sends you direct to the Ryanair and other airlines sites directly.

Flight booking by app is in its infancy and we recommend booking via a standard internet browser, but the Skyscanner app gets our approval for information on the go.

Hotel search

Hotel Reservation Service HRS

The HRS app is friendly, easy to use and the following features make it our top recommendation:

  • Full details including multimedia and map placement
  • 250,000 hotels worldwide.
  • Flexible booking arrangements

For bookers of business travel, flexibility is essential. HRS allows most bookings to be held up to 6pm and cancelled prior, free of charge. And credit cards are charged locally at check-out.

Hotels.com

Hotels.com offers discounts of typically 10 – 15% via this easy to use, if American biased app.

The search facility using your GPS location is particularly handy for business travellers. Their loyalty scheme, ‘Welcome Rewards’ gives one night free for every 10 nights booked.
But, bookings have to be prepaid in full offering little flexibility.

Hotels Combined

Our favourite Internet based hotel search engine is HotelsCombined but their app is a relatively unfriendly. It behaves more like a web portal than a true app. Hopefully Hotels Combined will update their app.

Whilst apps are good for on-the-go research, they cannot replicate all the benefits of a full sized web based search engine such as the one we feature for booking hotels:  http://www.bookingbusinesstravel.com/hotels/

Google Translate

The essential travel app will translate your phrase into most languages with a playback facility.

Can’t say more, simply try it!

How much are airport taxes in the UK?

This subject makes me quite cross. Airlines offer air fares at ridiculously low prices and then they charge for airport servicing and a massive “fuel surcharge” which they lump together with UK Government Tax.

Thus on a fare to Sydney*, for example, airlines and travel agents will say that “the price is £479 return, plus £403 tax, Total £882.00”

And we gasp.

The actual UK government tax in this case was £85.00 (less than 10%)

Now, £85 is not an inconsequential amount of money but it is much lower than VAT. And the airlines pay no tax on the aviation fuel that they consume.

Yet airlines continue to claim that government tax is destroying their industry. We think that that’s a bizarre claim.

A £226 fuel surcharge applies to the above journey. That is what’s destroying the industry.

Why should air travel be tax exempt?

If we want to complain, it should be that the First Class passenger who can afford to pay £7,962 for the same journey, should only pay £170 tax, or less than 2½ %

*Etihad London-Sydney out 4 February Back 15 February Air Fare £479 Fuel Surcharge £226 Airport and other government’s taxes £92.83 Total £882.83

Bangkok Hotels with river view

For the most enjoyable hotel location in Bangkok, choose a hotel with a view of the Chao Phraya River.

You’ll see traffic of a different kind and can enjoy the experience of visiting the Royal Palace by public river taxi.

There are surprisingly few hotels to choose between and I summarise them in order of value-for-money:

Royal Orchid Sheraton

All rooms are river facing so you will definitely enjoy a fantastic river view. The hotel is next to a main river taxi stop so it’s easy to get around. It’s a Sheraton but it’s also starting to show its age thus the rates are lower than you might expect. Breakfast is expensive so try and get a B&B rate, otherwise there’s a restaurant outside that serves European and Thai style breakfast.

You’ll find the best rates using our Hotel Search engine which compares 20+ Hotel “bed-banks” and tour operators

Millennium Hilton Bangkok Hotel

Located opposite the Royal Orchid Sheraton

You will have to request a river view and so there is no guarantee. And the location is on “the wrong side” of the river as the main tourist attractions, shopping, restaurants, night life etc are all on the other side

The Peninsula

A superb 5* hotel but also on the wrong side of the river

Shangri-La Hotel

Next to the Skytrain station the Shangri-La is an expensive choice.

AURUM the River Palace

Converted from a 50 year old warehouse, this hotel is a 4-storey European style building with 12 guestrooms, 4 of which are river views. The rate is THB4,400+ (£93)

For all these hotels, you’ll find the best rates using our Hotel Search engine which compares 20+ Hotel “bed-banks” and tour operators
