Is Etihad Frequent Flyer scheme worth joining?

If you are travelling business class with Etihad to Australia, is it worth signing up to their loyalyty scheme?

We took the following example

Etihad business class to Melbourne Australia

One round trip in Business Class at the lowest fare type (W class) earns 27,700 miles which is enough to buy a pair of Oakley ANTIX sunglasses (21,214 miles)

If you want to redeem miles for flights, an economy class ticket to Dubai requires 62,043 miles

Google Hotel Finder

As you would expect from Google, their HotelFinder site is slick!

They provide a date-driven availability and price display on the left hand side and a very good Google Maps on the right hand side.

So, full marks for presentation.

But the site is still in experimental stage and we have two issues with the site

  1. The availability is received only from the hotel itself. This means that hotel brokers who may have availability in the form of allocations, will not be featured. So the hotel will have a ‘likely sold out’ sign against it. When booking business travel, availability can often be an issue as a specific hotel will be requested. Therefore, it is better to use our hotel comparison site which searches hundreds of suppliers with one click.
  2. Prices are those provided by the hotel to Google and are usually exorbitant. We priced several hotels and soon realised that our recommended search engine consistently undercut the Google Hotel Finder rates.

Try our Hotel Search option above and compare the results with Google’s (below) to see for yourself!

Prague Hyatt

We searched for the Prague Hyatt Hotel using our hotel directories and couldn’t find one listed. We also used the Hyatt.com website and discovered that the closest hotel of that chain is in Berlin.

As of August 2012 there is no Hyatt in Prague.

For recommended alternatives, we suggest using our hotel search facility and narrow down the choice to the 5* properties. You’ll be surprised by the choice and rates offered.

Our recommendations for centrally located Prague hotels are:

Four Seasons Hotel,
Jalta Hotel
Prague Marriott

But do use our comparison site to ensure you find the best deal.

Discount fares from Australia to the UK

How to find discount fares for travel from Australia to the UK, if you are buying the ticket here in the UK.

Here’s a trick that just saved £471 on the price of a business class ticket:

Scenario: You’re in the UK and you want to buy a ticket originating in Sydney, Australia to travel Sydney-London-Sydney, in Business Class

Emirates airline fare, priced on the Expedia UK site, was £6,636 return.

But if you search on the Expedia Australia site, the fare was AUD9338 which equals £6,165 saving £471

This is because availability and prices are often cheaper locally as airlines can be somewhat protective about their local fares.

To find the Australia Expedia site, click on the link on our Expedia Page (above) and at the very bottom of the site, look for the Australia Flag.

Click on the Flag and then search for fares. Ensure that you have an up-to-date exchange rate to hand.

Booking Tip: Google the following: “AUD to GBP” and you’ll be given the exchange rate which is currently only 1.51 dollars to the pound.

I remember the time when it was 2.20…

How to apply for a free Australia Visa

Never use the companies that advertise on Google for a Australia Visa as you’ll end up paying a fee to them – unnecessarily.

Only use the official government site, which is free of charge. You can identify an official site because the address will end with a .gov.au (as per below)

Full details are here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/

But if you are from a European country and require a tourist visa or a visa for business purposes, you can apply free of charge directly here:

https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/visas/app/uu?form=TV

IMPORTANT NOTE: After clicking on the link above, you must SAVE the first page after which you’ll be asked to make up a password and the system will generate a Application ID, before proceeding with the “Next” button!
I wasted time trying to figure that out!

I hope that you appreciate this advice and that you compare hotel and flight prices using the search engines that we provide on this website

Thanks!

China Eastern Airlines to Australia

Skyscanner offers low fares on China Eastern Airlines to Australia from four travel companies, all at a similar price.

So who should you choose to book through? Who offers a reliable service?

We put them to the test.

A search for London to Sydney flights resulted in a cheap price offered with China South Eastern Airlines but the return journey requires a stopover in Shanghai.

Three companies offered fares of approximately £666 return:

Travelup, Omega Flightstore, 9Flights.co.uk and Travelpack

I called each company enquiring about the stopover, about the free hotel offered in Shanghai, and most importantly, would I need a visa as a transit passenger? I did not want to rely on a Google search for this information, because China visas can be very expensive, so I wanted to know before I chose to book. And I was reading conflicting information about visas, online.

Travelup phones appeared to be answered in India. The consultant seemed only capable of asking repeatedly what my departure date was. When he eventually addressed (or understood) my question, he couldn’t help and said I’d have to contact the Chinese embassy.

Omega Flightstore on their London Number, no reply, no queuing system, nothing!
Telephone: 020 7484 8909. The 0844 493 8888 did offer English or Chinese but nobody answered

Travelpack in Wembley 08444 930 461 understood the question but suggested that I phone China SouthEastern directly 020 7935 2676 where a very responsive consultant gave clear advice….

No China visa is required for a UK passport holder in transit and holding an onward international ticket, and a free hotel is provided. China Eastern suggested that we contact the online travel agent after making the booking as they need to obtain the stopover voucher from the airline.

Our advice: Travelpack is the best known to us, of the three quoted, so I would choose them in preference to the others.

But always use our recommended search engine for your initial comparison.

Booking Tips

A travel industry expert suggests the following 5 booking tips:

  1. Always use a comparison site. The best in the UK is Skyscanner
  2. Always choose to book short haul flights directly on the airlines sites, examples:  easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz.
  3. Book British Airways direct here directly with BA as they don’t discount short-haul fares
  4. Long haul travel should be booked through Expedia or Opodo as these two companies consistently offer lower fares. Expedia do not charge for credit card payments.
  5. Always search for one seat as you may be offered the last seat at a lower tiered price level which, if you ask for two, you will not be offered.

Skyscanner Business Class

Skyscanner is our favourite search engine for economy flights worldwide, so we feature it under our Flight Search page (see above)

It is especially good for European fares because it offers direct availability from low-cost-airlines that may be omitted by many travel agent systems. That’s because most of the low cost carriers have a direct sell policy and don’t “distribute” their flights via the global reservation systems that travel agents use.

Unfortunately, there are no Business Class fares on Skyscanner.

UPDATE 22nd October 2014. SkyScanner includes business and premium economy class but you need to edit your search after using our search form.

Because of the complexity of business class fares, we recommend that you focus on two companies, namely Expedia and Opodo.

Both offer the reliable service that Business Class requires.

We provide search forms for both companies here on our site under the Expedia and Opodo headings above, together with some useful booking tips

easyJet discount 2012

The truth about where to find easyJet discounts.

Search for easyJet discounts and you’ll see offers that apply to easyJet holidays, usually in the form of voucher codes, but never for “flight only”.

Discount vouchers for easyJet flights do not exist!

easyJet holidays

We’re often told that it’s cheaper to book flights and hotels together, so we thought we’d put easyJet holidays to the test.

We have compared a variety flight + hotel bookings by using

easyJet.com
Our Flight Search tool
Our Hotel search tool.

We ensured that we were comparing like-with-like
i.e.

Availability and Price checked at the same time of day
Same airports, same flights, same hotel room type and including breakfast

On every comparison, we saved between £48 and £107 by booking separately, by choosing flights that departed with the same airline but from Gatwick Airport.

Using the identical Stansted flights, we saved between £10 and £33

On no occasion was the price more the same or more than that offered by easyJet holidays

So, our advice is:

Use our flight search tool to find the best flight options.
If you select easyJet, ALWAYS book through easyJet.com website, never through a third party or travel agent.

Use our hotel search to find the best priced hotel.

Heathrow Express App

The Heathrow Express App is a very simple application for booking full fare tickets on your mobile.

The most annoying feature is the date selection. Instead of a user friendly calendar , you need to select from a date wheel. It does not help by providing the days of the week, so you need to make sure that the date you request is the correct day.

Furthermore, as only “full fares” are offered, you could do better by booking discount fares as advised in our blog articles.

Search our site for Heathrow Express and you’ll be directed to the most up to date online discounts.

Wizz Air to Charge for Onboard Baggage

The normal practise of charging for check-in baggage is understandable because the airline incurs a charge too.

But Wizz Air is to charge a fee of EUR10 to carry on anything larger than a laptop size bag of 42x32x25cm

And the weight restriction will be just 10kg

The trial is on Luton – Katowice services for bookings made on or after from the 9th July 2012 for travel from 1st August onwards

The large cabin bag dimension for which you now have to pay the fee is 55x40x20cm

We think this is a step too far.

The airline thinks we’ll carry less as a result but really, 10kg is next to nothing!

When using our popular flight search, remember that you need to add approximately £16

Where to find easyJet discount prices

This article is written to help you find the best easyJet discount fares, impartially. We do not want to sell you a ticket!

easyJet and the travel trade

Unlike the Ryanair policy (see my article here)  easyJet do work with travel agents, travel management companies, both online and offline.

They facilitate the booking processes and in the case distribution through Travel Management Companies reservation systems they charge a small fee of perhaps £3 per flight

From our experience to date, unlike the traditional airlines (Air France, Lufthansa, etc.) easyJet do not offer discounted fares via the travel trade.

Some online agents package easyJet flights with hotels and add a mark-up. You can do better by booking your flights independently of your hotels. The only factor to consider is that you’ll not have the benefit of ATOL protection should everything go wrong.

So, where do I find easyJet discounts?

For an impartial search of easyJet flights and all the other airline options (including some that you may not have considered before), our flight search tool is invaluable, saving you time and money.

But always choose to book direct. Never select the online agents that are included in the comparison, because, by the time you complete the booking, extra charges and fees will increase the total fare.

Ryanair Discount 2012

In this article, we discuss the variety of sources of Ryanair discount ticket prices in 2012 .

Ryanair fares are offered by travel agents, package holiday companies and the airline itself.

1. Travel agents and Travel Management Companies (TMC’ s) simply book direct on the Ryanair website and charge you a transaction fee to do so. This is the case for online and offline companies. Unless the agent has marked up the fare, you’ll pay exactly the same as booking yourself online although if you pay the agent by credit card, you’ll pay two credit card surcharges (the Ryanair and the Travel Agents merchant fees). And you may incur problems because you haven’t booked direct and you may not have been informed of all the baggage and other restrictions.

2. Package Holiday Companies (online and offline) will bundle hotels and flights together, add a mark-up and sell that online or through brochures. Ryanair does not offer discounted prices to these companies. They may claim to offer a discount but you can achieve better prices if you follow our summary advice below.

3. Ryanair Direct. Michael O’Leary is disliked by the “travel trade” in general, because he does not want to work with them. Instead, the airlines distribution model is to sell only direct to the public. Indeed, Ryanair has taken some trade companies to court to try and stop their unauthorised access to his reservation system. An exception to this situation is our flight comparison search facility, on our Flight Search page (see above).

So, to summarise, the fact is that you will never find a discount Ryanair ticket cheaper than that offered by Ryanair direct.

Always use our authorised Ryanair Flight Search because you will be offered live Ryanair prices at Ryanair.com prices AND alternatives such as British Airways.com , easyJet, WizzAir, Jet2 etc.

Even if you know that Ryanair is your choice, you may see an airline that you had never considered before.

And for the cheapest hotel rates, with a low price guarantee, our comparison site will find you the best deal. See our Hotel Search above.

Transfer BMI Diamond Club to BA Executive Club

Transfer your BMI Diamond Club “destination miles” to the BA executive club

The transfer rate is 1.1 and we recommend that you transfer now.

Login to the BA executive club page and click on “manage my account” where you have the option to “combine my Avios”

The instructions are simple but you’ll need your BMI account number (including all the 0000) and your BMI password.

You can choose how many miles to transfer. I transferred all of mine as I don’t see much future for the BMI scheme now that British Airways has taken over BMI

Hotel near Council of European Union Brussels

We have been asked to find a hotel near to or within walking distance of the Council of European Union, Justus Lipsius Building, Rue de la Loi 175, Brussels.

The closest and best standard appeared to be the Renaissance Brussels but the normal rate was EUR239 and well above the European Body guideline rate of EUR140 per night.

Even the EU Government rate for this hotel is EUR189.00

By using our comprehensive “Hotel Search” as above, we found promotional rate of just EUR 69.00 including tax, per night. This rate applied to midweek too. NB Rates subject to change, exchange rate fluctuation and availability.

Business travel needn’t be expensive – try our Hotel Search engine to see. And remember, the site works just as well for your leisure trips and holidays.

How to discount Eurostar Fares to Amsterdam

The through fares from London to Amsterdam are generally good value when compared with flight costs including all the additional charges of baggage, check-in, transport to the airport etc.

Top 5 Tips for finding best hotel prices and availability

Always request just one room

Even if you need more than one room, start by requesting one. That way, you’ll be offered the cheapest room price available.
Then, change your search to see if additional rooms are available at the same price.

Searching for a specific hotel?

If you know the name of the hotel, don’t waste time scrolling through all the hundreds on offer.
Use the “Hotel Name Contains” search option on the left hand side under Refine Your Search

Need flexibility?

Choose a rate that only requires a credit card to guarantee, as opposed to the pre-paid prices and pay at check-out. Booking.com and Hotels.com routinely offer this option.

How to get to the hotel?

Most hotels provide public transport information but Google Maps has an excellent tool. After locating your hotel use the Get Directions button to the left of the map. Choose by car, public transport or walking.

Book direct

Always use our hotel comparison engine but if the best price is available directly from the hotel’s web site, make that your preferred choice. The hotel will prefer that as they’ll pay lower “distribution fees” and they’ll have immediate access to the guest name. You may get preferential treatment dealing with any problems with your reservation and, for special requests such as a late check-out.
Otherwise you may be redirected to the third party booking agent through whom you made the reservation.

British Airways Advice – Don’t Travel!

British Airways has launched a clever advertising campaign that may go viral.

By entering your postcode, you’ll see your street featured in the commercial.

I’ve just seen my flat through the aircraft window – quite brilliant!

The advert urges us, “don’t fly, support team GB”

Try it now at http://taxi.ba.com/

If you decide to disregard that advice, do come back and we’ll help you to find the cheapest flight, and hotel
